Obama Tour Backfires

July 23, 2008 – 9:11 pm

I can understand Obama traveling to Iraq and Afghanistan to meet with the troops, talk to military leaders, a listen and learn trip – so to speak, as the presumptive Democratic nominee and as Illinois Senator. Sure it is odd that he laid out his plans for Iraq and Afghanistan in an op-ed piece in the New York Times one week before he left, but I will not criticize him for that.

I also do not mind his traveling to Israel, our closest ally in the region, knowing full well that he must garner more support from the Jewish community in America, who pay close attention to Israeli politics, to win the presidential election. I think it would be obvious that he would meet with Palestinian and Jordan leaders as well, in order to appear fair minded.

The problem I have with all these meetings however, is that he is acting as if he is President-elect. This could be part media fault part Obama’s wishful thinking fault, but it is wrong nonetheless. We are a nation of voters, not slaves to the main stream media, and no one assumes presidency in this country, not even Obama.

In the next few days, Obama will be touring several countries in Europe. I think Americans expect him to be touring the bible belt, or New England states, but hey I do not dictate Obama’s travel schedule. The very fact that he is promoting himself abroad, in my opinion, will hurt him in the end, and not being an Obama fan myself, am delighted that he is there and not here.

The reporting on this trip so far has been mainly favorable. It has become obvious that the press is cheering for Obama regardless of his shady connections and inexperience. Some journalists are so obsessed with an Obama win, that it is difficult to diffuse through fact and fiction.

A CNN political analyst in “Why Europe Loves Obama”, opines:

“To his European fans, Obama is the symbol of American renewal. They know three things about him. That he is young. That he is African-American. And that he has a Muslim name.

Europeans live in countries with large, unassimilated Muslim minorities. The idea that someone with Obama’s name and background could become President of the United States astonishes and impresses them. Europeans are thrilled by the idea that the United States can suddenly transform itself from a pariah in the world into an inspiration to the world.”

I never heard someone use the term “pariah” to describe America. With everything that America does and has done for the world, I think CNN is out of line, and oftentimes try to shape the story. After all, we practically fund the UN; we provide the most aid to countries in need, from those who are injured from natural disasters, to aiding the sick, poor and diseased, to removing oppressive governments, America has been a leader in the world. Most people understand this here and abroad.

I am sorry to disappoint you CNN, but Obama commanding an adoring crowd somewhere in Europe, does not impress me at all.  A picture with the American troops cheering our President does.

  2. Europe loves Obama? Good, let him stay there! We don’t need the so-called “sophisticated” Europeans telling us how to live. They are rapidly joining the Caliphate; are capable of throwing the Jews under the bus once again; and encourage euthanasia in the once proud Netherlands where sick babies are put to death by “doctors”. They have turned into one big museum.

  3. Europe’s population numbers or suffering for it, because of pressure to limit family size and liberal abortion and euthanasia rights, Europe is dying. This has been evidenced in numerous publications and studies.

America would be dying too, if not for the steady flow of immigrants and their children.

  4. I agree McCain is by far the best man for the job, he also has run a far cleaner race choosing not to be involved in most of the ignorant actions of the other 2. I understand that it is time consuming to look up each persons history but how can any american make a intelligent vote with only the persons word, if you come to my store and I tell you how honest I am only to sell you something that did not hold up and then refused to refund your money, would you ever do business with me again? Likewise the same with politicians, which is why I made the Hitler statement, talk is cheap it means nothing it is your track record that counts, Obama has told so many lies he forgets what he says, this guy tried to play the race card and it backfired in his face. He is pathetic a poor excuse for an American citizen let alone someone who WANTS TO RUN THIS COUNTRY.

He has convinced himself that is something special because he was raised by a white woman many black children are raised by white families, had he or his stupid staff bothered to do some homework they would have found that more white people adopt black children from tired world countries than any other group.

But I do not see him as some savior for the masses in any way that office is not about color or women ’s rights it is about making this country a force in the world like it used to be.

The dollar is at the bottom in so many countries, people are so stupid they don’t realize that if you do not FIGHT FOR FREEDOM it will be TAKEN AWAY, there will ALWAYS be some power crazed maniac somewhere who thinks they have the right to control you.

Any person who comes to this country and was born in this country and reaps the reward for doing so better be ready to fight for the freedom that OUR FOREFATHERS Fought and died for, and moron who does not believe had better get a clue before it is too late, I hate war everyone hates war BUT it is a terrible fact of life and has always been so since the beginning of man.

  5. I can’t agree with you more. The idea that Obama is some kind of “messiah” is ridiculous. The candidate is running on one theme. No more Bush. That theme is just not enough.

Obama keeps talking about change. But change is not always good change. Obama wants to grow the government, over tax the rich, and stick it to private business. This will only hurt the people, decrease jobs and economic growth.

The economy doesn’t rest and fall based upon the President because there are too many factors involved. But, what the President can do is hurt the economy by taking money from one group and giving it to another.

When you punish the big guy you’re also punishing the little guy who works for the big guy. The more the government stays out of American life, the better. The government is simply not equipped to “fix” the economy.

  6. I think the fact that he drew a crowd of over 200,000 in Berlin is proof enough that the world can see is potential.

Give the man credit - You picked on him for not having enough foreign policy experience and then you dog him again when he makes efforts to gain that experience and gather knowledge about what he is representing.

It’s a terrible shame the extent that one will go to to rip another human being down for trying to do what is right and fixing the wrongs of the world.

This man has proven over and over again that he is willing to do what it takes to lead this country and you scoff at his every effort and pick apart the smallest of details about his character.

  7. Thanks for writing. The fact that 200,000 people went to see Obama’s speech (together with a few popular rock bands)in Germany means absolutely nothing to me.

I disagree that the fact that Obama “gathered information” on his 6 day European tour constitutes foreign experience.

I do not believe that Obama will lead us in a better direction.

My political philosophy is on the other side of the spectrum. So, yes, I am critical of Obama because I think his solutions to our problems are wrong.

Specifically, I think universal health care will bankrupt the economy. I am pro-life and would like to see the U.S. Supreme Court move to the right. I believe strongly in school vouchers opposed to failing schools. I think we should privatize social security. I think marriage is a sacred institution reserved for a man and a woman. I think the government spends too much money and is too large. I think Obama will not successfully protect our nation against foreign foes.

  8. [Subject] StateDemocracy.org Equips You for the 2008 Elections

    Dear Citizen:
Are you ready yet for the November 4th Elections? How about your friends, family, and neighbors?
More Americans are expected to vote this year than ever before in history, so don’t be left out! Be sure to ask everyone you know the following questions:
 Are you registered to vote? If you moved recently, have you updated your voter registration?
 Did you apply for an Absentee Ballot? Do you know your state may not require any reason?
 Can you find your local Polling Place? Do you know it may have changed from last time?
The answers to these questions — and all your voting needs — can be found at http://www.StateDemocracy.org — the FREE 1-Stop citizen empowerment portal that Delivers Democracy to your Desktop! StateDemocracy is among the Internet’s first (since 2001) and most encompassing civic empowerment tools.
In order to boost voter participation this year, StateDemocracy.org is offering FREE widgets for all 50 states. You can simply download and embed these widgets into your own website so your visitors can register to vote, get an absentee ballot or find their local polling place.
    Lobby Congress Via StateDemocracy
StateDemocracy.org also equips you to maintain an active dialog with your state and federal lawmakers once they are elected. And RIGHT NOW is an especially opportune time to contact your U.S. Senators and House Member, as Congress takes up major legislation on such issues as offshore oil drilling, another economic stimulus package and all federal appropriations bills over the next few weeks.
As you lobby your elected officials, remember that lawmakers view your constituent input as reflective of scores of other citizens who felt similarly, but didn’t have (or take) the time to share their opinions.
