The cover of the July 21, 2008 New Yorker will feature the Obamas in a negative light. Both the Obama and McCain campaign call it “tasteless and offensive”. The New Yorker is a publication laced with satire, cartoons, and other commentary regarding the lifestyles of urban New Yorkers. Of course they are generally left leaning, but that’s nothing new. In a press release issued with the preview of the magazine, the following statement was made:

“On the cover of the July 21, 2008, issue of The New Yorker, in ‘The Politics of Fear,’ artist Barry Blitt satirizes the use of scare tactics and misinformation in the Presidential election to derail Barack Obama’s campaign.”

The depiction, in other words, is to show Americans that it is the “right-wing” conservatives that are creating a certain image of the Obamas in order to scare voters. The right-wing conservatives are to blame! How ingenious of them!

Let’s play a quick game of you decide. After you read all of the following points, you can decide whether the depiction of Obama is based upon what conservatives say or based upon what the Obamas have said and done themselves.

In April 2008, Obama told a group of San Francisco voters that folks in Middle America are “bitter” and “cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren’t like them”. Sure the folks in San Francisco agreed with Obama wholeheartedly, but what about the rest of us? This is not a scare tactic, this is true.

For twenty years, the Obamas attended the Trinity Church of Chicago which is based on liberation theology, a form of socialistic Marxism. The Rev. Wright was the Pastor until recently. The Rev. Wright is mentioned in Obama’s book “The Audacity of Hope”, and was long known to be Obama’s spiritual advisor and friend until he was caught on tape and on live television thereafter, while Americans watched in horror, advising his church members to “God Damn America” along with other anti-white and anti-American sentiments, including that HIV/AIDS was caused by the American government. This is not a scare tactic, this is true.

Obama refuses to wear a flag pin. I really do not care what Obama’s excuse is, he wants to be the Commander in Chief of this great nation, but refuses to wear a flag pin. Enough said. This is not a scare tactic, this is true.

Michelle Obama was quoted as saying that America is a “mean” country and “for the first time in my adult life, I have been proud of my country”. It doesn’t matter that she graduated from Harvard Law School, commands a 6 figure income, and lives the American dream better than most of us, the first time she is proud of America is when her husband is at arms-reach of the White House. (My immigrant father taught me to love America from as early as I can remember simply because it is free.) This is not a scare tactic, this is true.

Obama’s father and step father are both Muslim. This is not a scare tactic, this is true.

Obama refuses to put his right hand over his heart to Pledge allegiance to America. This in my eyes, in unforgivable. This is not a scare tactic, this is true.

Obama accepts campaign contributions from the hateful group Code Pink. Code Pink has openly called for the death of American troops, they contribute funds to terrorists, accuse the President of war crimes, all while embracing communist dictators like Hugo Chaves and Fidel Castro.

Yes, the picture is satirical and I do not expect Michelle Obama to be traveling around with an AK-47 anytime soon, but one has to admit, figuring in all of the weird things coming out of their mouths together with their anti-American sentiment, the drawing is brilliant, but don’t blame the right-wing conservatives, the Obamas deserve all of the credit themselves.

  1. The satire is clearly lost on you.

  2. I see it more of a caricature, albeit unintentional, than satire.

  3. Who was the cover supposed to satirize? The left, the right or the reader’s reaction? The New Yorker intended the cover to be satire of conservatives, but actually it backfired as we know. Alas there is where the humor lies! In humor, oftentimes the truth is revealed. Perhaps the reason Obama supporters are so offended, is because of their fear that the truth has come shining through from the cover of the New Yorker. The cat is out of the bag and the recent poll #’s showing McCain’s climb proves it. Good job Mr. Blitt!
