Obama’s speech on the war in Iraq and national security this morning in Washington D.C. is no strategy at all; it is the same stale mantra of useless promises based on disputed facts. “I was right all along” Obama proclaimed. “We never should have went into Iraq” because “Iraq had nothing to do with the 9/11 attacks”. This argument might have held some water during the 2004 presidential election, but the year is 2008, and a lot has happened since then.
It has been well documented that chief leaders of Al Qaeda were in Iraq and in communication with dictator and former President, Saddam Hussein, before and after 9/11. Training camps that taught hate towards Israel and America were in Iraq, before and after 9/11. We also know that the UN and Iraq Oil for Food program was a sham and that profits were funneled to American hating terrorists, before and after 9/11.
There were many valid reasons to topple Hussein, and the issue will be discussed for decades if not centuries to come. For Obama to rehash these issues each time he discusses Iraq is a complete waste of time. Americans want to hear something new, something consistent and relevant to the current situation. Obama continues to support an abrupt withdrawal of American troops in Iraq regardless of the conditions on the ground. Any major military decision should be thoughtful, tailored and suit American interests, not some misguided promise made over five years ago.
Obama’s hawkish position toward Afghanistan is a change from his anti war stance in Iraq. I do understand there is a difference between Afghanistan and Iraq, but there is a compelling argument to stabilize both, especially in light of their proximity to each other. A surge in Afghanistan, coupled with a withdrawal in Iraq, will no doubt force terrorists back into Iraq fighting against a much more vulnerable security force.
I am concerned that Obama’s lack of understanding of this long and difficult war will hurt America. I am concerned that Obama does not acknowledge the success from the surge in Iraq, and how that denial will affect policy. I am concerned that Obama’s obsession with the anti war crowd is overriding the real issues surrounding the need to help secure Iraq’s newly formed and fragile government. I am concerned that Obama, who has no military experience himself, does not fully comprehend the enemy we face, or the concept of freedom abroad.
